From 1990 until 1997 Jorrit has led "Trio Jorrit Dykstra", with bassist Mischa Kool and British drummer Steve Argüelles. He writes most of the compositions, but the band also plays some of Argüelles' tunes, as well as sparkling versions of pieces by Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols, the Beatles and Balkan traditionals, all giving space for some adventurous improvising. The musical personalities of the three members create a fresh and original group sound in which melody, rhythm, colour, subtility and equality are the most important values. All this is mixed with an exciting drive and a touch of satire. The Trio has released three CDs, and they've performed extensively at various European clubs and festivals, as well as on radio and TV. Clarinettist Marty Ehrlich, reed player Lothar Ohlmeier, pianist Benoît Delbecq, guitarist Marc Ducret and string player Stuart Hall have been featured as guest artists with the Trio. They have also accompanied a series of silent movies from the beginning of this century.
Some press quotes:
"There is a sublety here that continues to reveal itself with repeated listens, keeping this release close to the top of my pile." (Cadence Magazine on "European Echoes")
"...polished, erudite, at times whimsical, pancultural modernism." (Cadence Magazine on "Whistle")
"...lively, energetic music." (the Wire)
"...his pure sound
on alto saxophone, his sensitivity for beautiful melodies and his
skill to write them." (NRC Handelsblad)
"His music is introvert and
controlled, but never cool. Emotion plays a big role, but is never
translated into outbursts of energy." "...an amazingly flexible sound.
His solos are wonderful and hold your attention." (Trouw)
"Playful,
swinging, lively, poetic, melancholic, melodic... "
(Jazzfreak)
"...dreamy, arcadic, mystic, teasing and full of humour
and understatement." (Groninger Dagblad)
"...and every now and then it
swings really hard, so maybe it's jazz." (NRC Handelsblad)
